“Big Band Benefit” Jazz Concert

The Bands of Spalding High School are bringing a great musical event to Griffin and its surrounding communities.  On April 9, 2011, 6:30 PM at the Griffin Auditorium, the band will be hosting the 4th Annual big Band Benefit featuring The Sentimental Journey Orchestra and the Spalding High School Jazz Band.

This event features one of the top professional Jazz Orchestras in the southeast, The Sentimental Journey Orchestra.  Throughout The Sentimental Journey’s 36 year history it has played the best in Big Band music from all decades.  This 17 piece band carries two singers and plays all the best music from the likes of Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Les Brown, Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Harry Connick, Jr., Michael Buble, and many more!  The band has played in many top venues in the southeast including the 75th anniversary of the Fox Theater in Atlanta and the Gala celebrating Jimmy Carter’s Nobel Prize.

The Sentimental Journey Orchestra has been extremely generous to come play to support the band program at Spalding High School.  The Spalding Jazz Band will also perform at this event.  This is an all-volunteer group of students from the band program that rehearse after school once a week.  In addition to this concert the Jazz Band plays for events around the community.

All proceeds from this event go to support the Spalding High School Band program.  The expenses of running a great program for the students of Spalding County far outreach the funding the school system is able to provide.  The money raised through this benefit put instruments in the hands of students who can’t afford them, buys music for the students to play, and helps us send students on trips that broaden their educational experience.  This event played a large part in getting the band to Chicago last year where the students saw all the cultural wonders of the city as well as earning 1st place in the Heritage Festival competition.
